Mission Statement
The mission of Sunshine Arts is to reach out and create community and self worth, via resident and visiting artists, by teaching arts, music, and dance, primarily to underserved neighborhood children at no cost to child or family. The educational environment within Sunshine Arts provides a sense of community and respect for property, nature and others.
Goals for Sunshine Arts
Sunshine Arts is an inspired artist in residence and outreach outlet for neighborhood kids to gather and learn the wonderful worlds of dance, literature, music and art.
Background
Sunshine Arts is located at 41 Sunshine Road. Ms. Sheila Modglin started Sunshine Arts in the summer of 2004, inviting children from the neighborhood to listen to stories Ms. Sheila read as they sat around the fish pond in the front yard and sometimes letting the kids help water the plants and feed the fish. Mr. Patrick O'Banion has been living here since the fall of 2007, teaching classes to children along with Ms. Eva Mauchly, Ms. Rita Bauman and Ms. Susan Hinchey in music, dance, and art. The classes are scheduled after school and some on Saturdays; in spite of the listed class schedule, children come daily Sunshine Arts, often enjoying Mr Patrick's fresh baked bread or cookies. The goal is to enhance the education of our future generations. Executive director, Sheila Modglin grew up with a very strong sense of community within her family, "we would do any thing for each other. I want to share the sense of community that I have in my life with all the beautiful people right here surrounding this home that symbolizes the manifestation of living art through all the work of my generous and creative family and friends." This home screams to be shared with the neighbors and the world; from the pond with the waterfall out front and into the foyer with the maps overhead from all over the world to one of Upper Darby with the red circle saying "you are here." The hardwood floors and the mirrors are perfect for the dance classes and the art classes take place around a table covered with photographs, stamps and maps. Walls are exposed brick pointed with odd pieces of jewelry, marbles, coins and stamps and more. The kitchen with it's wonderful natural light pouring through 5 venting skylights and sliding glass doors opening onto the gorgeous mix and match marble tiled flooring with the Swiss Chalet-style roof lofting above the deck are all part of what makes Sunshine Arts perfect for sharing the arts
